The Story

There are Bentleys that represent an era, and then there are those that seem to define it. This 1956 Bentley S1 Continental Coupe is the latter, a coachbuilt grand tourer created at a moment when performance, craftsmanship and understated British elegance existed in near-perfect balance.

The S1 Continental was supplied by Bentley as a chassis and driveline, leaving its bodywork to a select group of Britain’s great coachbuilders. This example, chassis BC18BG, received its lightweight alloy coupe body from Park Ward and left the factory finished in Velvet Green with a fine red pinstripe. Its long bonnet, restrained brightwork and beautifully resolved proportions give it the sort of presence that needs very little introduction.

Inside, rich red leather is set against beautifully refinished woodwork, while beneath the bonnet sits Bentley’s 4.9-liter straight-six fed by twin SU carburetors and paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Acquired from England by its previous longtime owner in 1998, the Bentley was subsequently brought to the United States and underwent an extensive refurbishment encompassing its mechanical systems, interior and instrumentation.

More than seventy years after it was built, the appeal remains remarkably clear. It is elegant without being ornamental, substantial without feeling excessive, and unmistakably Bentley without needing to announce itself.
